Bronze Medal in 51st International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva: International Acclaim for Our Ambitious Leap to the Open Group

2026-03-26

In collaboration with the Drainage Services Department (DSD) of the HKSAR Government, our student research team traveled to Switzerland to compete in the 51st International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva from March 11–15, 2026. Entering the "Open Group" category, the team competed directly against global universities, government agencies, and private enterprises, and finally obtained Bronze Medal.

The International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva is one of the world's largest invention exhibitions, bringing together top-tier scientific achievements annually. While student inventions typically participate in the "Junior" category, our team took the ambitious step of challenging the Open Group. Competing against professional organizations and achieving such results is a truly remarkable feat.

Addressing the issue of antibiotic pollution in Hong Kong’s water bodies, the team integrated biotechnology, chemistry, and information technology to develop "Remedix"—a portable antibiotic detection platform. Using genetically modified E. coli as the sensor core, combined with IoT (Internet of Things) and machine learning algorithms, the system enables automated on-site testing.

During the development process, the DSD recognized the scientific basis and practical application value of the project, leading to a partnership to build an industrial-grade "Lab-in-a-Case" system. Students were also given the opportunity to exchange ideas with professional chemists and the Director of Drainage Services, gaining deep insights into actual operations of sewage treatment.

Our school extends its heartiest congratulations to the team for their outstanding performance and thanks the DSD for their support in nurturing young scientific talent. We hope this experience would inspire more students to step out of the classroom and utilize their scientific knowledge to respond to societal needs.
